Click the pictures below for information about the conditions that can affect the fingernails in adults. The fingernails can be damaged by a variety of causes. In women, the overuse of cosmetic products (eg, nails glues, polish solvents) can lead to splitting of the nail layers (onychoschizia) or lifting of the nail from the nail bed (onycholysis). Infection and chronic skin diseases (such as psoriasis) can also lead to these problems. The main infection that affects the nails is onychomycosis. This is a fungal nail infection that leads to discolored and brittle nails.
