Click the pictures below for information about conditions that can affect the mouth in adults. The mouth is unlike most other parts of the skin because it is moist and the tissue that makes up the surface is very different from the skin on the arm, for example. This type of environment can promote the growth of fungus, causing a condition called thrush (oral candidiasis). Growths and ulcers can occur in the mouth. These conditions may be as simple as a canker sore (aphthous ulcer) or a blocked salivary gland, called a mucocele. However, skin cancer (squamous cell carcinoma) can also cause ulcers or growths and needs the prompt attention of a doctor. Lichen planus and a condition known as hairy tongue are other causes of changes to the surface of the mouth and tongue.
